What is PTaaS (penetration testing as a service)?

PTaaS keeps the methodology of a traditional pentest but changes how it is bought, delivered and acted on. Here is what that means in practice.

Penetration testing as a service (PTaaS) is penetration testing delivered through a platform instead of a statement of work and a PDF. The testing itself is still performed by qualified people following an established methodology. What changes is everything around it.

How PTaaS differs from a traditional pentest

Scoping and booking happen online, so testing can start in days rather than weeks. Findings appear in the platform as soon as they are confirmed, so developers can start fixing during the test. Each finding can be pushed into Jira or GitHub, discussed with the tester, and retested in the same place once fixed.

What stays the same

A good PTaaS engagement still has a defined scope, vetted testers, a recognised methodology such as OWASP, PTES or NIST SP 800-115, and a final report suitable for auditors and customers. If a provider cannot show you a sample report and explain its methodology, treat that as a warning sign.

When PTaaS fits best

PTaaS suits teams that release often, need recurring tests across several applications, or want to track remediation rather than file a report. It also pairs naturally with a bug bounty: the pentest gives methodical coverage and audit evidence, the bounty gives continuous discovery in between.

Questions to ask a PTaaS provider

Who are the testers and how are they vetted? Which methodology do you follow? How are findings validated and scored? Are retests included? Can reports be exported for auditors? How does the platform integrate with our tracker?
